Moving (1998)
For string Orchestra (originally - string quartet
No.1) This composition in 3 parts aims to explore
string sonorities and East European folk flavours.
Much of the folklore of the area is modal, the
scales used in Ancient Greek times, and the first
movement is in the Aeolian mode. Mostly associated
with sorrowful music here I have used this mode to
give an anxious and unsettled character. The second
movement is formed of a series of chords, with
shifting centres of modality, which melt into each
other in a rich string texture, and the last
section, inspired by Bulgarian folklore is an
energetic dance in 7/8.
